Meet Abbey:
Can you share a bit about how you began your health and fitness journey?
Growing up, my mom placed great emphasis on getting outside each day to be active and eating foods “only her grandmother would recognize” – and this approached served me well up to college. Somewhere between college and full blown adulting I lost my motivation to stay active and eat healthy, falling into some terrible habits which included sitting on the couch for entire weekends and ordering all of our meals out. These choices resulted in a 30lb weight gain and some photos of myself that I am less than proud of. The moment I thought to myself “this picture is embarrassing” was the exact moment I decided I needed to take control – because prior to then, I had never once been self conscious about how I looked. From the beginning of my journey my goal has only been to build a strong capable body that I feel good about and to develop sustainable habits my husband and I can grow with. With that in mind I took it slow using the “crowd out” approach – adding in one healthy choice as I was comfortable in order to eventually crowd out the bad habits. I am happy to report that a strategy that began with adding in healthy breakfasts and half hour workouts on weekends only, has resulted in a routine (which I crave) that now includes workouts before work everyday and a diet that involves fresh meals from home each day of the week. It has been two years since I consciously chose to make a change, and while loosing the weight was never actually a goal – I now weigh 10lbs less than I did graduating college!

What does seeing results “inside and out” mean to you? How were you able to achieve this?
This has been my favorite “side effect” from creating a healthy lifestyle! For me, it was finally being able to control my severe anxiety and recognize how much I doubt myself. As I felt myself physically gaining strength it was glaring how often I was weakening my own presence through negative self talk and doubt. Now, anytime I notice these negative thoughts creep in I remember that I am a work in progress and I’m working hard to be my best self! Not only am I more kind to myself – I’ve found the best part of all this to be that I am a more emotionally available and supportive friend and wife.

What works better for you and why: AM or PM workouts?
AM workouts are best for me! I am so drained by the end of the workday I just don’t have the energy to get my sweat on AND cook a healthy meal. Plus, I feel so great all day knowing I got my workout in and the energy from it has made a huge impact on my productivity and emotional regulation throughout the day!

How has the LG Community played a role in your journey?
I love the LG Community something fierce! As soon as I began participating in the LG challenges and making connections through Instagram results came fast and my attitude on fitness shifted from something I had to do – to something I really wanted to do because it was fun, and it was time for me! That said, these girls have helped me in so many ways outside of fitness and have truly shown me that I am valuable and loved. As a person who struggles to make friends and find my stride in a group – I get emotional thinking about how easy the community made it to jump in and get comfortable fast.
Do you have any advice for a fellow LG Sister looking to make a healthier change?
My biggest piece of advice is to not pressure yourself to have the “perfect” journey. Stay in tune with how you feel and what your body needs and always listen when it says “take a step back”. These moments of self love and the occasional treat can fuel you to dive deeper into how you work towards your goal and will help you enjoy the journey that much more. Also, don’t wait for a Monday – just get started and find what works for you!
