Thoughtful Thursday Tip: So, about that burning feeling that develops during a workout… I’m sure you’ve heard and know it’s lactic acid. I know that this burning is a typical side effect of training, but I rarely stop to ever think what exactly is causing it. During a workout, the body requires a great deal of energy, which it can obtain from glycogen (carbohydrate) stores in the body. The metabolization of glycogen or glucose produces lactic acid as a by-product, and this lactic acid can then be taken up by cells to use for fuel. This process is also known as anaerobic glycolysis. During intense exercise, lactic acid production may exceed the bodies ability to remove it from the bloodstream, which is when we experience that muscle burn. Still, the delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) experienced the next day or so, is not due to lactic acid build up. This soreness is due to tiny tears in the muscles from training.
