If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook, you’ll recognize this picture as my post-workout shots from yesterday ((and if you didn’t see this, then click here and here so we can connect on social media))
I shared that after yesterday’s leg workout and after challenging myself with weight gains, it was the first time in my life (7 years of lifting), that I felt like I as going to be sick. If this is something you’ve ever experienced, read today’s tip of the day!

Tip of the Day: So, you’re pushing yourself physically and mentally during your workout and you become nauseous and lightheaded…what’s going on?? After this happened to me yesterday, I immediately jumped onto my computer and did some research. I’ve heard others experience this problem, particularly on leg day, but I wanted to understand why.
Causes of Nausea During Exercise:
(1) Pressure
During heavy weight training, we take deeper breaths and contract the core. This added pressure ((rep after rep)) can actually push food and acid back up your esophagus, leading to nausea and heartburn. I believe this was the culprit for me as I was challenging myself with weight in yesterday’s workout. I need to focus on light, even breathes.
(2) Eating Too Close to Your Workout:
A pre-workout meal can really benefit you and your workout or it can cause you to feel sick! If the meal before your workout is not given proper time to digest, it can come back up on you…literally! I suggest eating 2-3 hours before a workout and watching the amount of fat, even healthy fats, because fats slow the digestion process. The same goes for too much fluids!
(3) HIIT Workouts
High intensity interval training workouts and overall intense workouts require a great deal of oxygen to be supplied to the muscles in order for them to function properly. This pulls the blood volume within our body in two different directions: the stomach for digestion and the muscles for aerobic activity. In this case, the muscles will win, leading to our stomachs wanting to expel any food or acid, which is when nausea is experienced.

Have you ever experienced sickness while working out? What are some things that have worked for you?

That's good to know! I never knew lifting too heavy can do that! Sometimes I feel it's my preworkout so I've stopped taking that for the mean time

      Hi Daisy!
I don't believe it's the heavy lifting itself, but moreso how the heavy lifting can lead to heavier breathing and build up pressure; what I learned from yesterday's experience is to build up gradually so my body can handle those changes. I TOTALLY agree with you about the pre-workout…I find in general too much caffeine can just make me feel yucky!

Hope you're having a great week!

      XO

I rowed crew for 5 years in Middle School and High School and if anyone is familiar with it, knows how demanding it is on the body. Not the actual rowing itself, but the workouts. It's months and months of land training before even stepping foot (or ass) in a boat. If you weren't puking at the end of every practice or race, you weren't busting your ass hard enough. It was a very common thing to feel sit and puke during and after workouts. Puke and rally, that's how we got through it. And yet we kept coming back day after day, year after year.

      Hi Danielle,
I recently had a classmate who rowed and I was amazed by the training and commitment! I do agree that when you're physically pushing yourself to the ultimate limit each and every workout, you may feel sick!

Love your beautiful wedding picture, by the way 🙂

      XO,
      Lauren

I did this workout at the gym yesterday, my arms and back are SO sore, a GOOD sore though 🙂 Thanks! I love that I can save these to my phone and use it at the gym.

      Hi Danielle,
Ah, I love hearing that! I'm so happy you liked it and I agree about the saving to the phone – I used to have to buy my own plans because I didn't have the workout at the gym lol.

      Have a great weekend!

      XO,
      Lauren
