Tip of the Day:
Take it outside to turn up the heat…literally! By many of us, the
warmer temps are rolling in, and this weather lends itself perfectly to
intensify our workouts. Here’s the science behind why I suggest this.
Heat aids in vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. Have
you heard of pre-workout supplements?! Many of them contain ingredients,
such as citrulline malate, which stimulate this vasodilation.
Vasodilation is advantageous during a workout because the widening of
blood vessels allows for greater blood flow into the muscle cells. The
increased blood flow allows for increased nutrient deliver and a better
muscle recovery. You know that “pumped” feeling you get while weight
training?! That pump is a result of greater vasodilation. I like to
think of heat as a natural vasodilator. If you workout at home, try
taking an exercise mat out onto your driveway or lawn for your workout.
If you’re in the gym, warm up with a 10 minute jog in the gym parking
lot! Test it out for yourself and enjoy the enhanced effects all workout
long!
