MY LIFESTYLE JOURNAL: HAIR TIPS, DIY HAIR MASK, MY ROUTINE & MY HAIR VIDEO TUTORIAL

This post is coming to you from me (Lauren) and my hair because it truly has a mind of its own 😉

I am currently living in Texas where the humidity is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before (( tropical rainforest minus the awesome rainforest type of humidity )) For me, humidity = every day is a bad hair day, but with the cooler fall weather rolling in, I’m starting to regain control over my hair lol. This weekend, I put some time and effort into my hair and thought I would share a few of my hair tips, tricks, and favorite styles with you…

My Top 3 Healthy Hair Tips:
(1) Watch The Heat – I used to realize my hair was the healthiest and grew the most over the summers; then, I realized that when I wasn’t in my school routine, I wasn’t straightening or curling my hair much at all- B I N G O ! I try my best to limit heat use on my hair ((lots of top knots & headbands)) and to always use a heat protectant.

I like these two products for heat protection:

(2) Regular Trims – I know what you’re thinking…”I’m trying to grow out my hair, so I don’t want to cut it.” If you’re a long time reader of my blog, you know I’m a self-proclaimed “haircut phobic” so I feel ya! I ask for a trim and then snip snip…there’s 4 inches off! Ah!

I think the trick here is to find a stylist you trust and go regularly! I most likely needed a trim of 4 inches because of how long I went without a haircut. This is really important if you have long hair or are trying to grow out your hair because long hair is old,  fragile and more susceptible to breakage. To keep the ends from splitting and appearing thin, I like to get trims every 8-12 weeks!

(3) Healthy Fats – When I first heard that what you eat can play a role in your hair health, I was all over it! You too?? Okay, here’s what I’ve learned…

EAT THOSE HEALTHY FATS…avocado, salmon, almonds, and eggs are all great examples. From these foods, we can obtain healthy omega fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals all of which play a role in the health of our scalp, hair follicles, and overall hair. The biggest change I’ve noticed is in the shiny appearance!
My Go-To Homemade Hair Mask:
Ingredients:
-1/8-1/4 cup coconut oil
-1/2 avocado

Directions:
Before heading into the shower, heat coconut oil on the stove for a few seconds; when ready, massage it into your hair from root to tips. Also before showering, mash up half of an avocado until it turns into a smooth paste and then apply only to your tips (( this step is important otherwise it can be tricky to wash out ))

My Tip – Apply this mask in the shower after you shampoo then allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes before washing it out. The heat from your shower will open up your hair follicles, allowing the mask to make its way deeper into the shaft of the hair! Then you can go ahead and rinse, and follow up with your conditioner.
My Somewhat Odd Hair Routine:
-I only wash my hair once every 3 days
-After my shower, I apply Moroccan oil (( the smell and product are fabulous ))
-I always allow my hair to air dry, so I typically wash in the evening
-I apply a heat protectant before straightening/curling
-I curl my hair the morning after my shower and use those same curls for days (( you may notice some days, my curls look tight and other days, they look more relaxed… now you’ll know how long it’s been since I last washed hehe ))
-After I workout, I use dry shampoo ((if it’s a ridiculously sweaty workout, I will break my 3 day rule lol ))
-I sleep with my hair in a lose pony tail on top of my hair to preserve the curls

      Hi Melissa,
I LOVE the suave brand! I've tried high end and drug store brands & it's my favorite!

Great post. I can't help but wash my hair after every workout…still. I also have curly hair so my hair is always dry. Maybe I should try dry shampoo. Any recommendations for curly hair?

    • Fitness Barbie

      Hi Daisy!
That's exactly my problem…thick & curly hair that gets really dry and brittle if I wash it too much. At first, I felt gross if I didn't always wash it after my workout, but now I just hop in the shower and dry shampoo right when I get out! However, there are some days/workouts when regular washing just plain needed lol
