Is Social Media Ruling Your World #SelfieSocialCleanse

Do you find your fingers
glued to your phone hoping not to miss a picture-perfect moment that would make
for a great Instagram photo?  Do
the last thirty photos on your phone include pictures of beautiful sunsets,
meals, and your dog – some that made the social media cut and some that did
not? Is “selfie” a word you use in your everyday vocabulary?  If you answered yes to any of those
questions, then you may be like me (and millions of others) who have been
bitten by the social media bug and enjoy technology at our fingertips.

ABC is airing a new comedy
series, Selfie premiering on Tuesday, September 30th at 7 PM central
time. The show features a social media-obsessed woman, Eliza who decides to
focus more on being liked in the real world than having people like her
Instagram photos. I had a chance to watch the pilot episode of Selfie; then, I
took the #SelfieSocialCleanse challenge, going 24 hours without taking a selfie
and without texting.
As a health and fitness
blogger who connects with her readership via social media, you can imagine this
was quite the undertaking for me. I lasted about 6 hours without texting, about
8 hours without social media (hey- it’s my job), and an entire day without
taking a selfie. Even though I wasn’t completely successful, I did find some
great takeaways from the experience.
What Your Life FEELS Like
When you Don’t Care What your Life LOOKS Like:
-You Get Lost In the Moment-
Have you ever had the
experience of looking at the clock only to realize you’ve been on Facebook for
30 plus minutes instead of the 2 minutes you allotted yourself? Like Eliza, I
find social media almost effortless; it’s easy to be consumed by. In the day I
spent without my phone, instead of getting lost on Instagram and Facebook, I
got lost in a 90 minute yoga class, in reading a book by the pool for nearly 2
hours, and in a intimate, phone-free dinner date with my fiancé. Life just
flowed easily and enjoyably when I stopped interrupting special moments with
social media check-ins or quick text messages.
-You Focus More on Who and
What Matters-
When we have time to kill,
scrolling through our social media homepage or texting our friends keeps us
occupied. In Selfie, Eliza realizes very quickly that having friends is not the
same as getting friended on social media. On the day of my challenge, instead
of catching up with my friends and family on their social media pages, I
actually spent quality time with them. Memories are not made over a computer,
rather when we actually take the time to be, enjoy, live, and love.
Why I Still Believe Selfies,
Social Media and Texting in MODERATION are GREAT:
-Health Benefits-
As a health and fitness
enthusiast, nothing has kept me more accountable and motivated than social
media check-ins, and I have heard that same feedback from many of you. I
believe the difference here is the overall goal; in my social media selfies, I
have no makeup on and am sweaty from head to toe (pretty much as raw as it
gets), but the point is to show “I did it today and you can too.” When we can
use selfies and social media in an inspirational way, it has the potential to
motivate others to live a healthy, positive, encouraging lifestyle.
-Moderation is Key-
We’re all guilty of occasionally
getting caught up in technology; Eliza is fueled by the instant gratification
of likes and comments on her social media pictures, which is something I’m sure
many of us can relate to. Just as moderation is the key to healthy eating and
workouts, social media in moderation can enable us to enjoy living in the
moment, while still connecting with our friends.
I Challenge YOU:
I did the cleanse, and now I
challenge you to do the same! If you can’t do it for 24 hours, try even just a
few hours and share your experience with me and others! I would love to hear
what you think!

I freak out sometimes when I leave my phone home on accident. It's almost like feeling naked.
