5 TIPS FOR LIVING HEALTHY ON A BUDGET

It is important to not only keep your physical health in check, but also your finances! Don’t think you have to sacrifice one for the other. Below are 5 budget-friendly tips to get your health and fitness on.

Tip #1: Take Advantage of the Outdoors
No gym? No problem! The great outdoors won’t cost you a thing. There are so many things you can do outside to better your physical health, such as run or walk, which may be the obvious. You can also utilize parks or playgrounds to preform exercises that utilize your body weight for resistance: squats, lunges, pull ups, push ups, core work, etc.

Tip #2: Buy in Bulk and in Season
Eating healthy can be pricy, but it doesn’t have to be if you know how to keep budget in mind. My first suggestion is to shop the ads to see where your favorite healthy food items are on sale that week; this is especially important with items such as meat and produce. I then suggest buying these items in bulk. Use what you need for the week and freeze the rest for later. Lastly, know what items are in season so you’re not overpaying! The grocery store employees are very helpful if you have any questions.

Tip #3: Get Online to Get Fit
The Internet is a wonderful resource for finding free and inexpensive workouts, healthy recipes, and motivation! There are countless health and fitness blogs and workouts videos on YouTube to take advantage of; this is especially helpful for individuals wanting to workout from home. In fact, I often use YouTube for yoga videos in my home practice!

Tip #4: Guest Passes and Trial Memberships
Many gyms offer guest passes to existing members, so that friends and family of the member are able to experience the gym. If you do not belong to a gym, ask a buddy if their gym offers such a promotion. Also, gyms typically have trial memberships, which I highly suggest taking advantage of before joining a gym; this allows you to check out the equipment, amenities, and atmosphere. If you’re a student, don’t forget to ask about student memberships – there are typically lower rates for you!

Tip #5: Don’t Forget the App Store
Other than the Internet, the app store is a go-to of mine for all sorts of unique and free assistance in furthering my health and fitness goals. A few favorites of mine: Gym Boss app has features such as an interval timer to keep you on track during HIIT, circuit or tabata style workouts, MyFitnessPal allows you to track the food you’ve eaten on a daily basis to stay on track with your macros, and RunKeeper collects all your running stats, such as pace, time and distance.
