Tip of the Day: Less is more when it comes to cardio. Did you know that interval style cardiovascular training creates a greater metabolic disturbance than longer, less intense cardio sessions?! This disturbance creates what is known as an “after burn” or a period where calorie burning is occurring at a higher rate following exercises. The greatest mistake with most interval style training is that the exercises are not intense enough and that recovery periods are not long enough. Most research suggests the high intensity intervals should be an all out effort period of around 30 seconds followed by a complete recovery period that can last up to a couple minutes before repeating. Now, I want to point out that it is important to do workouts you enjoy – if you prefer longer, medium-intensity workouts, enjoy them! This information is beneficial for anyone who incorporates interval style training into their workouts. Some great examples of interval training: sprints, hill sprints, bike sprints, boxing, battle ropes, and tire flips just to name a few!
